Marginalia (after the E-flat Cello Suite of J.S. Bach)

PROGRAM NOTE

Marginalia comprises seven responses to Bach’s fourth cello suite in Eb major. Four of these—corresponding to the original Prélude, Courante, Sarabande, and Gigue—are standalone movements that can be performed independent of the suite. In the other three movements, the repeats contain asides, retorts, refractions, and erasures: in a word, marginalia.
